Mount Kenya: Climbing Routes, Point Lenana and Trekking Guide
Africa's second-highest mountain, with jagged peaks, glaciers and alpine moorland.
Mount Kenya is an extinct volcano whose highest peaks, Batian and Nelion, are technical rock climbs. Most trekkers aim for Point Lenana at about 4,985 metres, which can be reached without climbing gear on a multi-day hike through bamboo forest, moorland and rocky terrain.
The main routes are Sirimon, Naro Moru and Chogoria, each with different scenery and difficulty. Huts and camping are available along the way, and acclimatisation days are essential. For a longer, busier climb see Kilimanjaro routes compared.

At a glance
- Highest trekking point: Point Lenana, about 4,985 m
- Technical summits: Batian and Nelion
- Routes: Sirimon, Naro Moru, Chogoria
- Typical trek: Three to five days
Routes
- Sirimon: gradual ascent through moorland, good for acclimatisation.
- Naro Moru: steeper and shorter, with a boggy section.
- Chogoria: dramatic scenery and lakes, popular for descents.
Altitude and Safety
Altitude sickness can affect anyone above 3,000 metres. Take your time, drink water and descend if symptoms worsen. Guides carry first aid and know the weather patterns, and mornings are best for summit attempts.
Compared With Kilimanjaro
Mount Kenya is quieter and more technical, while Kilimanjaro is higher and more famous. Some trekkers climb both, though they are in different countries. Combine a trek with Laikipia for wildlife afterwards.
