Mombasa and the Kenyan Coast: Old Town, Fort Jesus, Beaches and Swahili Culture

A coastline of old trading towns, white sand and warm water, ideal after the bush.

Mombasa is Kenya's main port and its second-largest city. Its Old Town has narrow streets, carved doors and Fort Jesus, a Portuguese fort from the sixteenth century that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The coast has long been part of Swahili trade routes linking Africa with Arabia and India.

Beyond Mombasa, the coast has long beaches and reefs. Diani lies to the south and Watamu, Malindi and Lamu to the north. A few days by the sea balance the early starts of a safari, and the Indian Ocean climate is warm throughout the year. See Diani Beach for the best-known stretch.
