Laikipia and Ol Pejeta Conservancy: Rhinos, Chimpanzees and Private Wildlife Conservancies
A highland plateau of private conservancies with rhinos, chimpanzees and activities not allowed in many parks.
Laikipia is a plateau north of Mount Kenya, made up of large ranches and conservancies that now emphasise wildlife. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is the best known and is home to the largest population of black rhinos in East Africa, along with the last two northern white rhinos on Earth, kept under armed protection.
Ol Pejeta also hosts the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, which cares for chimpanzees rescued from the bushmeat and pet trades. Visitors can combine it with chimpanzee trekking in Uganda to compare sanctuary and wild experiences.
This guide is part of our East Africa travel guides. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Rhinos
Ol Pejeta's rhino sanctuary allows close, guided viewing of black and white rhinos. The northern white rhinos are protected round the clock, and visits are usually arranged in advance with rangers. Conservation fees support anti-poaching work.
Activities
Because Laikipia is private land, operators can offer night drives, horseback safaris and guided walks. Wildlife includes lions, elephants, Grevy's zebras and wild dogs in some conservancies.
Planning
Stay two to three nights in Laikipia and add Mount Kenya or Samburu to your route. See Mount Kenya trekking for the mountain.
