Preparing for a Hike
Train with hill walking, break in your boots and pack for rain and cold even at lower altitudes. Hire porters; they support local families. Read fitness and preparation, packing list and health advice. See also adventure and mountain hiking.
Sample Plan
A mountain week could pair a Mgahinga volcano hike with gorilla trekking and a rest day at Lake Bunyonyi, or combine Elgon trekking with Sipi waterfalls and Jinja. The Rwenzori Central Circuit usually needs a dedicated week.
Practical Tips
Pace yourself, drink often and listen to guides about altitude. Pack layers, rain gear, sun protection, gloves and a headlamp. Train for at least a month beforehand, and travel with insurance that covers hiking at altitude. Porters make a huge difference. See packing list and fitness advice.
Best Time and Conditions
Dry months are easier, but mountains create their own weather. Start early, expect cold and rain at altitude and keep a flexible schedule.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Packing cotton clothes that stay wet.
- Ignoring altitude symptoms.
- Not training.
- Leaving gear choices to the last minute.
