Rwenzori Mountains National Park: Trekking the Mountains of the Moon
Snow-capped peaks on the equator, unusual alpine vegetation and some of Africa's best hiking.
The Rwenzori Mountains, often called the Mountains of the Moon, rise on Uganda's western border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Margherita Peak, at more than 5,000 metres, is among the highest points in Africa, and the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its glaciers and giant heathers and lobelias.
Trekking here is a serious adventure and a very different experience from the gorilla and savannah parks. This page explains what is involved. For related ideas, see Uganda mountain hiking adventures and adventure tours.

We recommend the length of trek that fits your experience and tell you honestly when a route is too ambitious.
Preparing for the Rwenzori
The weather is wet and cold at altitude, so waterproof clothing, warm layers, sturdy boots and gaiters matter. Conditions underfoot are often muddy. Talk to a doctor about altitude and fitness. Our packing list covers general kit; we add a mountain list when you book a trek.
Best Time to Trek
The drier months are generally better, though the mountains are wet at any time. See our season guide.
Combining the Rwenzori With a Safari
The mountains lie close to Queen Elizabeth and Kibale, so they fit on a western loop. See Queen Elizabeth and Kibale.
Trekking Options
The Rwenzori Mountains, often called the Mountains of the Moon, are a high-altitude range on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Margherita Peak, at about 5,109 metres, is the third-highest peak in Africa, though summit attempts require technical equipment and experience. Most visitors choose shorter hikes in the lower valleys, where giant heather, moss-covered forest and mist create a dramatic landscape.
- Day hikes: walks from the trailhead toward the first huts, suitable for fit travellers who want a taste of the mountains.
- Multi-day treks: circuits of several days with guides, porters and mountain huts. The Central Circuit is the most popular.
- Cultural walks: community-based walks with the Bakonzo people.
Preparing for the Weather
The Rwenzori are wet, muddy and cold. Even in drier months you should expect rain and low temperatures higher up. Pack waterproof jacket and trousers, good hiking boots, gaiters if you have them, warm layers, gloves and a hat. Porters are a standard part of the experience and support local livelihoods. Read the packing list and check your insurance.
