Rwenzori Central Circuit Trek: Mountains of the Moon Guide
The classic multi-day trek in the Mountains of the Moon: mud, mist, giant lobelias and glaciers above.
The Rwenzori Mountains are Africa's highest non-volcanic range and form the Uganda-DRC border. The Central Circuit is the best-known trekking route, passing through bamboo, moss-draped forest, heath and rocky high-altitude terrain. It is wet, cold and demanding, but also one of the most memorable treks in Africa.
Summit attempts on Margherita Peak need technical equipment and experience and are separate from the standard circuit.
At a glance
- Park: Rwenzori Mountains National Park
- Duration: About a week (approx.)
- Difficulty: Hard; mud, altitude and weather
- Support: Guides and porters required
What to Expect
Expect mud, rain and cold, mountain huts, and views that appear and disappear with mist. Porters carry heavy loads and are part of the experience. Fitness and good boots matter more than technical skill.
Preparation
Train for steady uphill walking, pack waterproof layers and gaiters, and travel with insurance that covers trekking. Read fitness advice and the hiking overview. See Mount Elgon for a different style of trek.
Sample Plan
A circuit itinerary typically lasts about a week, moving between mountain huts and gaining altitude gradually. Allow extra days for weather and rest. Many trekkers finish with a relaxing day in Kasese or Fort Portal.
Practical Tips
Waterproof gear, spare socks, gaiters and a dry bag are crucial. Expect mud, rain and cold. Train with long hikes. Tip porters and guides fairly. See Rwenzori Mountains National Park and Mount Elgon trek.
Best Time and Conditions
Drier months reduce, but do not remove, rain and mud. Cold is constant at altitude, so pack carefully. Build spare time into your schedule.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Packing cotton and no spare socks.
- Underestimating mud.
- Not training for multi-day effort.
- Trying to rush acclimatisation.
