Kibale Forest National Park: Chimpanzee Trekking & Primates

The forest where most visitors meet Uganda's chimpanzees, with a dozen other primate species.

Kibale Forest National Park, near Fort Portal in western Uganda, protects a mix of tropical rainforest and woodland that is home to one of the highest concentrations of primates in Africa. It is best known for chimpanzee trekking, which has a high success rate, but the park also offers forest walks, birding and the nearby Bigodi Wetland.

Kibale pairs naturally with Queen Elizabeth to the south and Bwindi beyond, which is why it appears on so many Uganda safari packages. Our detailed guide to chimpanzee trekking in Uganda covers the experience.

How to Get to Kibale

Kibale is roughly five to six hours by road from Kampala via Fort Portal, depending on traffic. It sits between Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth on a western loop; see driving distances.

Best Time to Visit Kibale

Chimpanzee trekking works all year. Dry months are easier underfoot; wetter months bring more fruit in some seasons and a lush forest, but muddier trails. See our season guide.

Combining Kibale With Other Parks

A classic route is Kibale then Queen Elizabeth, including the Kyambura Gorge for a second chimpanzee option. The 3-day Kibale chimpanzee safari works as a short trip, and the 5-day primate safari combines it with gorillas.

Chimpanzee Trekking or Habituation?

Kibale offers two ways to spend time with chimpanzees. Standard tracking is shorter and suited to most travellers. The habituation experience lasts much longer and follows chimpanzees as they become used to people. Read both guides: chimpanzee trekking in Uganda and the habituation experience.

Kibale is also known for its 13 primate species, and Fort Portal makes a friendly base. Combine it with Queen Elizabeth and Semuliki for a western Uganda circuit.
