Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale Forest

A full day in the forest with a chimpanzee community that is still being accustomed to humans.

The chimpanzee habituation experience is a longer alternative to standard chimpanzee trekking. Instead of an hour or so with the group, you can spend much of the day following them with researchers, from the moment they leave their night nests until they settle again in the evening.

It is one of Uganda's most immersive wildlife experiences, and best for travellers who like detail. For standard trekking see chimpanzee trekking in Uganda.

Compare

How It Differs From Standard Trekking

  • Much longer: you may spend many hours with the community.
  • Smaller groups: few visitors per community.
  • Insight into the work: you see how researchers continue to accustom chimpanzees to human presence.
  • More demanding: a long day, often on foot, in warm humid forest.

Who It Suits

Photographers, wildlife enthusiasts and travellers with the stamina for a long day. If you prefer a shorter experience, standard trekking is easier.

Permits and Booking

Habituation permits are limited and priced by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Book well ahead. See Kibale for where it fits in a route.

Combining With Gorillas

The experience pairs well with gorilla trekking later in the trip; see the gorilla habituation experience and the 5-day primate safari.

The experience

What You Do During the Day

The habituation experience begins early in the morning. You follow researchers and trackers as they find a chimpanzee community that is still becoming used to humans. You may stay with them for several hours, observing feeding, grooming, play and social interactions. Because the chimps are not yet fully habituated, they can move quickly and behave less predictably.

  • Expect a long, active day with mud, vines and uneven ground.
  • Bring packed lunch, plenty of water and rain gear.
  • Group size is small to reduce disturbance.
Choosing

Is It Right for You?

This is best for keen wildlife enthusiasts and photographers who want more time than a standard trek. If you are short on time or prefer a lighter day, choose standard chimpanzee trekking. Read more about Kibale and the wildlife packages.

On the day

Photography and Etiquette

Because you spend many hours with the chimpanzees, habituation is a favourite with photographers. Expect low light under the canopy, so bring a fast lens or a camera that copes with higher ISO settings, and keep your gear in a waterproof bag. Flash is not allowed. Keep your voice low, avoid sudden movements, and stay at the distance your guide specifies; chimpanzees can carry human diseases and can also be unpredictable.

Researchers and trackers will brief you at the start, then lead the group. Follow instructions closely, especially when chimpanzees move quickly across the forest floor.

Planning

Combining With Other Activities

Because habituation takes a full day, plan other activities for the days before and after. Many travellers combine it with the Bigodi Wetland walk, a visit to Fort Portal crater lakes or a transfer to Queen Elizabeth. See also Kibale Forest National Park and itinerary ideas.

UWA fees
