Driving Distances Between Uganda's Parks

Approximate road distances and travel times so you can plan a realistic safari.

One of the most common mistakes in planning a Uganda safari is underestimating travel time. Distances look short on a map, but road conditions, traffic and stops mean journeys take longer than you might expect. The figures below are approximate and vary with traffic, road works and the season.

Use them with our guides to packages by length and Uganda's national parks. Part of the Uganda travel guide.

Tips for Planning

  • Do not schedule more than about six hours of driving in a day if you can avoid it.
  • Break long journeys with stops such as Lake Mburo or Ziwa.
  • Allow extra time near Kampala, where traffic can be heavy.
  • Consider flights for the longest legs: fly-in safari packages.

Common Loops

A western loop runs Kampala, Murchison, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi and back. A shorter option focuses on the south-west for gorillas. See itinerary ideas.

Reality check

Why Time Matters More Than Distance

Distances in Uganda can look short on a map but take much longer because of traffic around Kampala, winding mountain roads, roadworks and slow trucks. Plan on average speeds that are modest, and treat any driving times as approximate. A day with six or more hours on the road leaves little time for activities.

Examples

Typical Travel Patterns

  • Kampala to Murchison Falls: a full day, broken by Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
  • Kampala to Kibale and Fort Portal: a long day, with a break on the way.
  • Fort Portal to Queen Elizabeth: a shorter, scenic journey.
  • Queen Elizabeth (Ishasha) to Bwindi: a few hours on a rural road, often combined with tree-climbing lions.
  • Kampala to Bwindi: a very long day; many travellers split it at Lake Mburo or fly.

Fly-in options can save a full day on each long leg; see fly-in safari packages.

Planning

Designing a Realistic Itinerary

Leave at least one night per major park and avoid back-to-back long drives. Use packages by length and itinerary ideas as a starting point.

Road Conditions and Safety

Main highways are mostly paved, but park roads are often dirt and can be rough after rain. Night driving is discouraged because of unlit vehicles and pedestrians. A professional driver-guide who knows the roads makes a real difference. See safety advice.
