Mount Gahinga Hike: A Shorter Volcano Climb in Mgahinga

The gentlest of the three Ugandan Virunga volcano hikes.

Mount Gahinga is the smallest of the three volcanoes in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the one that gives its name to the park. Its summit crater holds a swamp rather than a lake. The hike is shorter and less demanding than Sabyinyo or Muhabura, which makes it a good introduction to volcano walking.

Even so, trails can be steep and muddy, so wear proper boots.

At a glance

What You Will See

The trail passes through bamboo and forest, with a chance of buffalo or birds. The summit crater has a swampy centre and views of neighbouring volcanoes when the weather is clear.

Combine It

Plan with golden monkeys and gorillas. Compare Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Muhabura. See Uganda hiking overview.

Plan the day

Sample Plan

A half to full day: climb through bamboo and forest to the crater, enjoy the views, and descend. Plan an afternoon of rest or a cultural visit.

Good to know

Practical Tips

Pack as for any volcano hike: boots, layers, rain gear and water. Trails are muddy after rain. Hire a porter if you want support. See Muhabura and Sabyinyo.

Timing

Best Time and Conditions

Mornings are typically clearest. Wet weather makes trails muddy but the forest is atmospheric. Allow a full morning to afternoon.

Avoid these

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating it as a simple stroll.
  • Not carrying rain gear.
  • Skipping boots.
  • Forgetting water.
UWA fees

Volcano Climbing Fee

UWA lists Mgahinga volcano climbing at $100 for foreign non-residents, $80 for foreign residents and UGX 50,000 for East Africans.

About these rates. UWA states that tariff fees are subject to change without prior notice. FNR = foreign non-resident, FR = foreign resident, ROA = rest of Africa, EAC = citizen of an East African Community member state (paid in UGX).
