Mount Muhabura Hike: Highest Virunga Volcano in Uganda

The highest volcano in the Mgahinga range, topped by a small crater lake.

Mount Muhabura is the highest of the three Ugandan Virunga volcanoes. The long ascent passes through bamboo and montane forest to open slopes and a small crater lake at the top. Because of its height, it is a demanding day, so start early and pace yourself.

Altitude can affect some hikers, so go slowly and drink water.

At a glance

The Ascent

Trails are steady and steep, with changing vegetation as you climb. Mist can cover the summit, so pack layers and waterproofs. A guide and armed ranger accompany hikers.

Preparation

Train with long hill walks and carry layers. Compare with Sabyinyo and Gahinga, and read the hiking guide.

Plan the day

Sample Plan

Depart before dawn, climb steadily through changing vegetation, reach the crater lake area if conditions allow and descend carefully. The day is long, so snack as you go.

Good to know

Practical Tips

Altitude can bring headaches; hike slowly and tell your guide if you feel unwell. Carry warm layers and waterproofs; cold and mist are common. See Sabyinyo and Gahinga.

Timing

Best Time and Conditions

Dry months offer better visibility and firmer ground. Cloud often covers the summit later in the day, so early starts matter.

Avoid these

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Underestimating altitude.
  • Carrying too little warm clothing.
  • Moving too fast early on.
  • Not eating enough.
