Chimpanzee Lifespan, Diet and Habitat: Where Chimps Live and What They Eat

Wild chimps live about 33 to 40 years in forests and woodlands, eating mostly fruit.

Chimpanzees live in forests and woodland savannahs across West, Central and East Africa. Wild chimps usually live about 33 to 40 years, longer in captivity. They are omnivores: fruit makes up most of the diet, with leaves, seeds, insects and occasionally meat such as monkeys.

They live in large communities that split into smaller groups through the day. Males can be aggressive towards rivals, so rangers keep visitors at a distance. See chimp size and the habituation experience.
