Getting Around Uganda: Safari Vehicles, Domestic Flights and Roads

Distances in Uganda are long and roads are slow, so choose your transport to match your itinerary.

Most safari travellers move around Uganda in a private 4x4 or minivan with a driver-guide, and some add domestic flights for the longer legs. Because roads are slow, distance alone understates travel time.

This guide compares the options. For distances see driving distances between the parks and for flights see fly-in safari packages.

At a glance

  • Most common: Private 4x4 safari vehicle with driver-guide
  • For long legs: Domestic flights between Entebbe and park airstrips
  • In towns: Taxis, ride-hailing and boda bodas (motorbike taxis)
  • Arrival: Entebbe International Airport
Road

By Road: Private Safari Vehicle

A 4x4 with a driver-guide is the standard way to travel. Roads on main routes are paved in places, but many park roads are unpaved and slow in the rains. The vehicle doubles as your game viewing platform, with a pop-up roof in many safari vehicles. Self-drive is possible but not recommended for first-time visitors; see self-drive and guided drive fees.

Air

By Air: Domestic Flights

Small aircraft connect Entebbe and other airfields with airstrips near some parks, saving a day or more of driving, especially for Kidepo or Bwindi. Luggage limits are strict, so pack soft bags. Aircraft landing fees are in vehicle, boat and aircraft fees.

Cities

In Kampala and Entebbe

Traffic in Kampala can be heavy at peak hours. Taxis, ride-hailing apps and boda bodas are common, but your hotel can arrange safe transport. See Kampala city tour, things to do in Kampala and arriving at Entebbe airport.
