Birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park: Kazinga Channel and Savannah
Savannah, wetland, forest and lakes all in one park, which means a long and varied bird list.
Queen Elizabeth National Park combines several habitats, and birders can add many species in just a few days. The Kazinga Channel attracts large numbers of water birds, the Kasenyi plains are good for open-country species, and Maramagambo Forest holds forest birds.
Birding fits naturally into the park's other activities, so non-birders in your group will still enjoy the days.

Best Ways to Bird the Park
Take the boat trip in the afternoon for water birds and early morning game drives for savannah species. Ask your guide to include a forest walk if you have time. Binoculars and a field guide or app will be useful.
Planning a Birding Stay
Two to three nights is enough for a good introduction. See Uganda birding tours and boat cruises.
Sample Plan
Plan a morning game drive on Kasenyi, a midday break, an afternoon Kazinga cruise, then a forest walk in Maramagambo or a Kyambura Gorge walk the next morning.
Practical Tips
Take a good field guide, binoculars and a notebook. The channel offers close views of water birds from the boat. Early morning in the savannah is best for bustards, larks and raptors. See Kazinga Channel and Kyambura Gorge.
Best Time and Conditions
Water birds are plentiful year-round, with migrants adding variety during the northern winter. Mornings are best for savannah birds and afternoons for the channel.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring the forest areas.
- Leaving the boat trip until midday.
- Carrying heavy gear unnecessarily.
- Not logging sightings.
