Game Drives in Uganda: Best Parks, Times and Tips

The classic safari activity: Uganda's savannah parks offer lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes and antelope without the crowds.

A game drive is a guided drive through a park in a safari vehicle, usually in the early morning or late afternoon when animals are most active. Uganda's main game-drive parks are Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, Kidepo Valley and Lake Mburo, and each offers something different.

Because Uganda receives far fewer vehicles than the best-known reserves of Kenya and Tanzania, sightings are often quiet and unhurried.

At a glance

What You Can See Park by Park

  • Queen Elizabeth: lions, elephants, buffalo, kob and hippos; Ishasha is known for tree-climbing lions.
  • Murchison Falls: giraffes, elephants, buffalo, lions and antelope north of the Nile.
  • Kidepo: a wilder, remote feel with species such as cheetah and ostrich in the dry open plains.
  • Lake Mburo: zebras, impala, eland and topi.

Making the Most of a Game Drive

Start early, carry binoculars and ask your guide about animal behaviour as well as names. Keep a window seat and a bean bag for the camera. Be patient at sightings and keep quiet; a calm vehicle sees more. Sit back from the roof edge unless your guide says it is safe. Pair drives with boat cruises and night drives for variety.

Planning Your Route

Two or three nights per park is a good rhythm. See itinerary ideas and wildlife safari packages.

Plan the day

Sample Plan

A classic day in Queen Elizabeth might start with a pre-dawn coffee and a drive across the Kasenyi plains to look for lions and kob, a late breakfast back at camp, a rest in the heat, and an afternoon boat cruise. In Murchison Falls, a ferry crossing north of the Nile leads to giraffe and elephant country; in Kidepo, drives often last most of the day because distances are bigger.

Good to know

Practical Tips

Ask your guide to explain what you are watching: behaviour, tracks and alarm calls tell a story. Keep windows or roof open only when safe, avoid sudden movement and never stand when animals are close. Binoculars make a bigger difference than a bigger camera. Dust is common in dry months, so cover cameras. Some parks offer self-drive but a guide finds more. See Big Five safaris and wildlife packages.

Timing

Best Time and Conditions

Dry seasons generally concentrate animals near water and make roads easier, while the wet seasons bring greener scenery, baby animals and fewer vehicles. The golden hours of early morning and late afternoon are best for wildlife and for photography, and midday is usually quiet.

Avoid these

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Cramming too many parks into too few days.
  • Skipping early starts to sleep in.
  • Standing up in the vehicle near animals.
  • Expecting to see all species on one drive; patience is part of safari.
UWA fees

Game Drive Fees

UWA lists a guided day game drive at $25 per guide for foreign non-residents in Murchison and Queen Elizabeth ($20 in Kidepo and Lake Mburo), night drives from $30 to $40 per person, and a self-drive fee of $10 per vehicle. See game drive fees.

About these rates. UWA states that tariff fees are subject to change without prior notice. FNR = foreign non-resident, FR = foreign resident, ROA = rest of Africa, EAC = citizen of an East African Community member state (paid in UGX).
