Birding in Murchison Falls National Park: Shoebill, Nile and Budongo

Nile birds, savannah species and forest birds within a day's drive of each other.

Murchison Falls National Park offers a mix of habitats along the Nile. The river and delta attract water birds, the savannah north of the Nile has open-country species, and nearby Budongo Forest adds forest birds on the Royal Mile.

The headline bird for many visitors is the shoebill, found in the delta. See shoebill tracking for details.

At a glance

  • River: Boat trips to the base of the falls and the delta
  • Savannah: Game-drive birding north of the Nile
  • Forest: Budongo Forest
  • Park guide: Murchison Falls

Where to Look

On the Nile, kingfishers, bee-eaters and herons nest along the cliffs and banks. On drives, look for bustards, hornbills and raptors. In Budongo, early-morning walks give the best chance of forest birds.

How Long to Stay

Three nights lets you combine birding with a game drive and a boat trip. See boat cruises and Uganda birding tours.

Plan the day

Sample Plan

Day one: the Nile boat trip toward the falls, noting kingfishers and bee-eaters. Day two: an early game drive for savannah birds and a delta trip for water birds. Day three: Budongo's Royal Mile at dawn before onward travel.
