Are Gorillas Endangered? Population, Poaching and Conservation in Uganda

Mountain gorillas have recovered to roughly 1,000 individuals, but remain endangered.

A census in 2018 counted roughly 1,000 mountain gorillas, and the IUCN moved them from Critically Endangered to Endangered. Other gorilla subspecies remain Critically Endangered. Threats include habitat loss, snares set for other animals, disease and conflict.

Tourism income pays for rangers, anti-poaching patrols and community projects. See gorilla permits and the Batwa people.
