Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe vs Kibale: Rwanda or Uganda?

Both forests offer excellent chimp encounters, but they feel different on the ground.

Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is best known at Kibale National Park, near Fort Portal, where several habituated groups are visited every day and sightings are reliable. Rwanda's Nyungwe Forest offers a more remote and physically demanding experience, with chimpanzees tracked on steep, forested slopes.

The two forests complement each other. Kibale has a dozen other primates and a flatter walking terrain, while Nyungwe has sweeping scenery, the canopy walk and a huge colobus monkey troop. If you are visiting both Uganda and Rwanda, it can make sense to choose the chimp forest that fits your route rather than treat it as a contest.

At a glance

  • Kibale (Uganda): Reliable, easier terrain
  • Nyungwe (Rwanda): Steeper, more remote
  • Typical time with chimps: About one hour
  • Extras: Kibale: 12 other primates; Nyungwe: canopy walk
Uganda

Kibale Forest

Kibale's trails are comparatively gentle and its chimpanzee groups are well habituated. Walks start at Kanyanchu, and the Bigodi Wetland nearby adds birding and village visits. See Kibale Forest National Park and Kibale in the dry season.

Rwanda

Nyungwe Forest

Treks in Nyungwe can involve long, steep walks, and groups may need to wait for chimpanzees to come into view. The reward is a wilder atmosphere and a landscape of mist-covered ridges. Guides advise good fitness and early starts.

How to Choose

If chimpanzees are your priority and you want the best chance of an easy sighting, Kibale is hard to beat. If you are already crossing to Rwanda for gorillas and want a second forest, Nyungwe is a natural extension. Our Uganda and Rwanda safari vacation covers both.
