Uganda and Kenya Safari Holiday
Gorillas and chimpanzees in Uganda, big cats and plains in Kenya — the classic East Africa combination.
The best of Uganda is forest, primates and rivers; the best of Kenya is open plains, big cats and, in season, the wildebeest migration. Together they make a well-rounded East African holiday, and the short flight between Entebbe and Nairobi makes the combination easy.
This page explains how to link them. See our Kenya safaris page for tours, and our wider guide to Uganda safari vacations for other ways to extend a trip.
Why Combine Uganda and Kenya
- Different landscapes: mountain forest and tropical wetlands in Uganda; savannah plains and rift-valley lakes in Kenya.
- Different wildlife: primates in Uganda, vast herds and big cats in the Masai Mara.
- Easy connections: regular flights link Entebbe and Nairobi, and Kenya also offers a coast for beach time.
Suggested Routes
- Gorillas first, then the Mara: a 5-day Uganda gorilla and wildlife safari followed by the 4-day Masai Mara safari.
- A fuller route: the 8-day ultimate Uganda safari plus the 7-day best of Kenya safari.
- With a beach finish: add Diani Beach through the 8-day Masai Mara, Amboseli and Diani safari.
Timing the Wildebeest Migration
The Masai Mara sees large herds of wildebeest between roughly July and October, though timing varies each year. If this is a priority, plan Kenya for those months and Uganda either side, noting that the drier months suit both countries.
Practical Points
The East Africa Tourist Visa covers both countries, and the two share a yellow-fever certificate requirement for arrivals from certain regions. We arrange the flights, transfers and local guides on both sides and keep your itinerary under one plan. Read our travel documents guide before you go.
How to Combine the Two Countries
Many travellers pair Uganda's primates and forests with Kenya's plains. You can fly between Entebbe and Nairobi, or travel overland with an operator. Think about timing: the Masai Mara wildebeest movement is seasonal, so match your dates to what you most want to see. Compare destinations in Uganda vs Kenya vs Tanzania.
Entry and Practicalities
Check visas for both countries and any multi-country options. See entry requirements. Our Kenya itineraries include the 7-day best of Kenya safari.
A Sample Structure
One workable pattern is five to seven days in Uganda for gorillas and chimpanzees, a flight from Entebbe to Nairobi, then four to six days in the Masai Mara and perhaps Lake Naivasha or Amboseli. Alternatively, begin in Kenya and finish with primates, which makes a restful ending. Plan buffer time for international connections, and check seasonal timing for wildebeest movements in the Mara.
Costs and Complexity
Two-country trips involve more flights, permits and park fees, so quotes are higher than for a single country. If budget is a concern, choose one country and do it well; read the three-country comparison and cost factors.
