Masai Mara Conservancies Explained: Mara North, Naboisho, Olare Motorogi and the Reserve

Private conservancies around the reserve limit vehicles and share income with Maasai landowners.

The Masai Mara National Reserve is bordered by conservancies, areas of land leased by Maasai families and managed for wildlife and tourism. The model limits the number of beds and vehicles per area, which makes game viewing quieter than in the busiest parts of the reserve.

Conservancies often allow activities not permitted inside the national reserve, such as night drives and guided walks. Entry to conservancies is usually through lodge bookings, and daily fees are higher than reserve fees. Many travellers combine one night in the reserve for the river with several in a conservancy.

Reserve vs Conservancy

The reserve offers the main river crossing points and is open to any visitor with an entry fee. Conservancies offer exclusivity, a more personal feel and cultural access, but you may drive further to reach the river.

Benefits for Maasai Communities

Lease payments go directly to landowners, which gives families a reason to keep land for wildlife rather than fencing it for farming. Guides and staff are often hired locally, and visits to villages can be arranged. Read more in the Maasai culture guide.

Choosing Where to Stay

Decide your priorities. If the migration crossings are a must, stay near the river. If exclusivity and walking matter most, pick a conservancy lodge. Many itineraries mix both, and our Mara safari is an easy starting point.
