East African Currencies: Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda Money Explained

Each East African country has its own currency; US dollars are widely used for safari costs.

The Ugandan shilling (UGX), Kenyan shilling (KES) and Tanzanian shilling (TZS) are the main currencies of the region, and Rwanda and Burundi use francs (RWF and BIF). The countries are linked in the East African Community, but there is no single common currency.

US dollars are widely used for safari packages, park fees and permits. For detailed advice on cash, cards and tipping in Uganda, see the Ugandan shilling guide and money, tipping and payments.
