Rwandan Culture: Umuganda, Greetings, Dance and Etiquette for Visitors

Rwanda blends quiet courtesy, strong community traditions and dance that is often performed for guests.

Rwandans are generally reserved but warm, and respect is shown through greetings, a handshake held a moment longer than usual and an unhurried approach to conversation. Kinyarwanda is spoken across the whole country, and English, French and Swahili are also used in business and tourism.

On the last Saturday of every month, many Rwandans take part in umuganda, a national day of community work in which neighbours clean streets, repair roads and build shared facilities. The tradition is a reason Rwanda's towns look so tidy, and visitors are sometimes asked to postpone activities until the morning of work is finished.

Performance

Intore Dance and Music

Intore dancers perform with spears and shields in a display that originated in royal courts, accompanied by drumming and singing. Performances are often included in lodge evenings and community visits, and they are a good way to meet local artists and learn about the symbolism behind each movement.
