Lake Edward and Lake George: Queen Elizabeth's Rift Valley Lakes

Two rift valley lakes joined by a channel famous for hippos.

Lake Edward, shared with the DR Congo, and Lake George lie in the Western Rift in Queen Elizabeth National Park. They are linked by the Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway about 32 kilometres long that draws hippos, buffalo and birds to its banks.

Both lakes were named for British royalty by 19th-century explorers. The Kazinga boat trip is one of Uganda's most popular activities; see the Kazinga Channel and Queen Elizabeth National Park.
