Golden Monkey Tracking in Rwanda: What to Expect in Volcanoes National Park

A playful, endangered monkey of the bamboo forest, and one of the easiest primate experiences in the Virungas.

The golden monkey is a rare guenon found in the bamboo forests of the Virunga volcanoes, with a golden-orange back and cheeks that stand out against dark bamboo stems. In Rwanda the habituated troops live on the lower slopes of Volcanoes National Park, so the walks are usually shorter than gorilla treks.

Golden monkeys are quick and acrobatic, feeding on bamboo shoots, leaves and fruit, and they rarely sit still. Photographers enjoy them because troops are large, with dozens of animals spread across the trees. The same species can be seen in Uganda's Mgahinga Gorilla National Park; see golden monkey facts.

How It Compares With Gorillas

Gorilla permits are limited and costly, and trekking can be strenuous. Golden monkey tracking is lighter on both fronts, which makes it a good add-on for families, for travellers short on time and for anyone whose gorilla permit is already booked. The monkeys are fast, so expect more movement and less quiet watching.

Seasons

Best Time to Go

The dry months give firmer trails and clearer views, but the monkeys can be tracked all year. Mornings are best for activity. Bring a rain jacket in any season because the mountains create their own weather.

Plan

Combining Activities

Many visitors do a gorilla trek on one day and golden monkeys on the next, then visit the Fossey grave before leaving. In Uganda, the same combination is available at Mgahinga.
