The Bachwezi Empire: Legend and Ancient Earthworks of Western Uganda
A semi-legendary dynasty remembered in oral history and ancient earthworks.
The Bachwezi are the rulers of a legendary state, often linked to Kitara, in what is now western Uganda. Oral tradition describes them as a dynasty of skilled rulers who vanished, after which the Babito dynasty emerged in Bunyoro. Historians treat much of the story as legend, though large earthworks at Bigo bya Mugyenyi and Ntusi suggest an early complex society.
Bunyoro, Toro and Ankole all draw on this heritage. See kingdoms of Uganda and the history of Uganda.
