Are Gorillas Dangerous? Aggression, Attacks and Safety on a Gorilla Trek

Habituated gorillas are generally calm; rules keep encounters safe.

Gorillas are powerful animals but typically peaceful. Habituated groups used for tourism have been accustomed to human presence over many months. Attacks on visitors are rare. Gorillas do not hunt or eat people; they are mostly herbivores, feeding on leaves, stems and fruit.

Rangers brief you before the trek and lead you at a safe distance. If a silverback charges, rangers advise crouching, looking down and staying still. See gorilla tracking rules and silverback facts.
